Why Are We Poor In Managing Our Finances.

Tomorrow is end month so lets talk about the most important thing that happens.....you being paid. On the issue of salary, how come many professionals are not able to manage thier finances? Professionals usually have a considerable advantage in personal finance—namely, they can budget for thier income unlike the self employed who are not assured at what will be in the bank come end month.

In theory, having an expected amount at the end of the month should make it easier for you to stay out of
debt, save more, potentially take on some calculated risks in a fairly manageable way (if desired), and generally accumulate wealth more quickly. But is that what happens?

I haven’t really looked for statistics yet, but anecdotally, it seems to me that many Kenyan professionals are not really watching their personal finances all that carefully. Just in the last six months or so, I have had conversations touching on personal finance with a handful of different folks in my office or otherwise in my industry/profession—all highly educated, all with healthy incomes, and all considered to be very bright folks with promising career trajectories.

Why are we not able to take care of our finances? Here’s my thinking on this so far:

* The obvious one is keeping up with the Kamaus, Otienos, and Mutiso next door. Professionals may think, correctly or incorrectly, that their jobs or career advancement require a certain level of expensive dress or similar accoutrements. You've heard of offices where the ladies compete on who will be the 'smartest'. They will take up soft loans to achieve this end.  If the SACCO commitee knows you by first name basis, then your in deep financial problem.

* Many professionals just starting up their careers probably have the hubris of youth. They feel like they are making lots of money now, and they believe that they will continue to make lots of money going forward. This may reduce their feeling that they need to watch their money carefully now.

* Hand-in-hand with that, many professionals probably believe that they are making more money than they really are— that is, that the money they make will go farther than it really does. Many young professionals don’t come from particularly privileged backgrounds; and their reference point may be that they are making twice as much (or more) than their parents were. Like most of us, they don’t factor in the effect of inflation over many years.

* Many professionals are in demanding jobs that require 60- to 80-hour work weeks. This shouldn’t literally mean that they don’t have time to manage their finances. But it may well mean that they lack the mental or emotional energy to tackle the personal finance in the time left— especially if they are not all that comfortable with how to tackle the personal finance.

Effects of GMOs

Explore the effects of genetically modified crops or foods on ecosystems and human beings. Learn definitions for genetic engineering, genetic modification and plant breeding. Do GM crops endanger the world's food supply? Valuable references point you to more information.
Butterfly on flowers c. 7-09 by Sally Odum

First some background information and definitions:
A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism that has been altered using recombinant DNA technology. Genetic engineering takes DNA molecules from different sources, and then combines them into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This new DNA is then transferred into the original origanism, giving it "modified" or entirely new genes compared to what it began with originally.1
Genetically modified crops or genetically modified (GM) foods are then foods that have been made using genetically modified organisms. Unlike the naturally grown organism found in food, the DNA of genetically modified organisms have been manipulated by genetic engineering. This is "unlike similar food organisms developed through the conventional genetic modification of selective breeding (plant breeding and animal breeding) or mutation breeding." First put on the market in the 90s, genetically modified crops or foods are typically soybean, corn, canola and cotton seed oil (transgenic plants); however, GM animal products have been developed as well. 2

Many people confuse genetic modification / genetic engineering with plant breeding. They are very different. Plant breeding has been done since ancient times – for example crossing a mildew resistant pea with another type of pea to produce a better variety of pea. In genetic engineering, Corn (Maize) and cotton are modified to have both herbicide tolerance and insect protection traits. Insect protection is provided by insertion of the Bacillus thuringiensis Bt insecticidal protein – creating what you’ve heard referred to as Bt Cotton and Bt Corn. Do you see the difference? Genetic engineering takes something that is not natural to a pea – or deriving from a pea – and inserting it into the pea – whether it’s the Bt insecticide or yellow from a daffodil to give it a yellow color. Plant breeding crosses like with like to produce like; while genetic engineering takes genes from two totally different life forms and forces them unnaturally to create a new life form. In other words, genetic engineering would never occur in nature.

Foods / crops in the United States that have been genetically modified are listed below, along with an estimated percentage of total U.S. production in 2006:
· Soybeans (approximately 89% of production)3
· Field Corn (approximately 61% of production)3
· Cotton (from which also comes cottonseed oil for consumption – approximately 83% of production)3
· Hawaiian Papaya (more than 50% of production) 2
· Amflora variety of Potatoes (amount of total production undetermined)
· Rapeseed (commonly called Canola – it’s used for cooking oil – approximately 75 - 79% of production)3
· Sugar Cane (Undetermined)
· Sugar Beet (Undetermined)
· Sweet Corn (Undetermined)
Rice (Golden Rice has three new genes inserted – two that naturally come from daffodils and one gene that comes from a bacterium – percentage of total production is undetermined)2

Effects Of GMOs On Ecosystems
The full effects of GMOs on the environment and ecosystems are largely unknown – damage is evolving as you read. One thing that worries many scientists is genetically modified or genetically engineered crops contaminating adjacent fields of crops or cross-breeding with native plants, thereby corrupting entire ecosystems. The wind blows the pollen from one GM field into the organic field of another farmer. The pollinators (bees, butterflies, etc.) carry the GM pollen to other plants. There is currently a global decline of pollinators, not just honey bees, all pollinators – is it related to GM pollen?
The jolting thing about this question is that it has not been studied adequately. It is known that cross-breeding does occur. How much damage is it doing behind the scenes? How much crossing has already occurred between native plants and GM plants? Will the genetically modified organisms mutate? Will the mutations change the world as we know it and contaminate the world food supply?
This is not to even to consider the many unanswered questions about the effect that the resulting vegetable or fruit may have on humans and animals. Numerous studies have shown extensive ill effects from GMOs, including increased allergies and worse conditions. The evidence is sufficient enough that an unmistakable alarm should have sounded to governments of all nations. To date, the U.S. and Canada still require no labeling of products that contain GMOs – from corn syrup to corn meal, cereals, vegetable oil, canned foods and additives. Additionally, the GMO's are in feed stuffs, so whatever commercial livestock you consume has probably been fed on GM feed. While 60 to 70% of all food consumed in the United States has GMOs present, the Federal Drug Administration has no safety testing requirements but relies on the biotechnology companies to provide their own testing.4
There are too many unanswered questions with genetically modified organisms / foods / crops. Scientists have been prevented from studying the full effects of GMOs because of patents held by the seed companies (i.e. Monsanto and others). This is your food supply – the world’s food supply that is at stake here. Seeds were here from the beginning of time and free for all to use. They were free for the farmer to collect the seeds from his harvest and put them up for next year’s planting. It is a phenomenon of the last decade when seed companies inserted something unnatural to a plant into a seed, then patented the seeds and prevented farmers from using the seeds the next year – they have to buy new seeds. How to Power 12 Volts Lights with Solar Panels at Your Home

The technology now exists to power 12 Volt lights with solar panels at your home. Modern Photovoltaic Panels are very efficient and can be easily mounted outside your home. The 12V lighting system requires a number of components to be connected, so it is wise to find a good electrician for the job.

Introduction

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels can be used to power your home lighting using a 12 Volts system. Modern Solar PV panels are becoming less expensive and combined with 12V LED (Light Emitting Diode), this system can reduce both the electricity bills and your CO2 footprint. The 12V LED lights use a fraction of the power and their design allows them to last for years. As a result, they are slowly replacing the older incandescent bulbs.
In this article, we will be exploring how to power 12 Volts lights with solar PV at your home.
We begin then, with a quick look at Photovoltaic Panels in detail.

Overview of Solar Photovoltaic Panels

Photovoltaic panels have been around for some time and used to be very expensive to manufacture and purchase. However, over the last decade, the materials used in their construction have raised their efficiency. This has also brought the price of the PV panel within budget for most folks considering installing this source of renewable energy. There is also the added benefit of the FITS system in the UK, and tax break system in the US, that lowers the cost of a PV system installation.

The modern panel is made up of two plates of semi-conducting materials that are doped to produce a negative and positive plate.
In one type of Silicon PV panel, the negative plate is coated with phosphorus to produce negative electrons, the positive plate being coated with boron, producing positive charges. The plates are then fixed together and wired to a resistance. When exposed to sunlight, a small voltage is generated and forms an electric circuit between the plates and the resistance. Numerous plates are joined together, increasing the voltage and current, and making up the PV panel.

How to Power 12 Volt Lights with Solar Panels at Your Home

For the purpose of this article, we shall look at replacing the existing 240V down-lighter units in the kitchen ceiling with 12V LED lights that can utilize the same fittings. The 240V wiring may also be suitable for 12V, although I know DC battery power requires heavy cables. This, however, is better left to the electrician to decide.
Once the system is set up for 12V lighting in the kitchen, other rooms can be added, adding solar PV panels as required.
In order to do this, we first have to calculate the total watts used in the 12V circuit to give us the size of the panel to be used and the number of batteries required. There are numerous power calculators available on the Internet, but I have personally used a power calculator from Solarpower (see link below).
There are at present, 10 - 240V LED spotlights in our kitchen ceiling, so we will use this as an example. I had these fitted when we did our kitchen makeover and I have included a photo below.
Kitchen Downlighters
Here we will use 10 LED 12V lights in the ceiling, and these are rated at 0.9Watts. According to Solarpower calculator, we will need a supply of 80W/hrs/day from our batteries and PV panel.
To calculate the battery requirement, again I used the Solarpower calculator and it returned a figure of 8A/hours capacity. I recommend coming up a bit from this figure, as the PV panel may not be operating at full power due to cloudy weather. In this case, a deep-cycle battery of 15A/hours may be more suitable.
Now we will look at the solar PV panels available to supply 12 Volts to the battery.
Applying the formula that I devised for a 12V power supply to a caravan or boat, it recommends the size of solar PV panel required as 30 Watt output. This may seem overly large, but it will only take 6 hours of sunshine to completely charge the battery. A selection of Photovoltaic Panels is shown below. (Please click on image to enlarge).
PV Panels fromWikimedia commons by Martin Broz Sbela
To recap then, the components required are as follows:
  • 12 Volt, 30 Watt PV Panel (30Wp)
  • 10A Solar Charge controller
  • 15A/hr Deep Cycle battery
  • 12 Volt insulated cable
  • 10, 12V LED lights
A 12 Volt circuit is shown below, incorporating the above components. (Please click on diagram to enlarge image).
12V PV Lighting Syatem Diagram
All we need now is to have the electrician wire up the kitchen lighting on a 12V circuit; isolating it from the rest of the house's 240V system.
Hopefully, with this guide and examples on how to power 12 volt lights with solar panels at your home, you will be well on your way to having great lighting while saving energy in a cost-efficient manner.

Robotics: Scope and Limitations of Robots

Written by: naveenagrawal • Edited by: Lamar Stonecypher
Updated Nov 24, 2009
• Related Guides: Microprocessors
Robotics engineers can design robots which can do a whole lot of things, ranging from delicate and precision tasks such as fitting small parts of watches and to the hazardous tasks such as fuelling the chambers of nuclear reactors. Robots are thought to be super-machines but they have limitations.
Despite the great advancements in the field of robotics and continuous efforts to make robots more and more sophisticated to match the capabilities of human beings and even surpass them, still, from a very scientific and logical point of view, robots developed up till these days are no way closer to human beings.

Scope and Limitations of Robots

In basic robotics we design machines to do the specified tasks and in the advanced version of it robots are designed to be adaptive, that is, respond according to the changing environment and even autonomous, that is, capable to make decisions on their own. While designing a robot the most important thing to be taken in consideration is, obviously, the function to be performed. Here comes into play the discussion about the scope of the robot and robotics. Robots have basic levels of complexity and each level has its scope for performing the requisite function.
The levels of complexity of robots is defined by the members used in its limbs, number of limbs, number of actuators and sensors used and for advanced robots the type and number of microprocessors and microcontrollers used. Each increasing component adds to the scope of functionality of a robot. With every joint added, the degrees of freedom in which a robot can work increases and with the quality of the microprocessors and microcontrollers the accuracy and effectiveness with which a robot can work is enhanced.

Example

To understand the scope for any robot of given complexity, we will discuss it with a very simple example. Consider a robot comprising of one member joined to the base with a revolute joint and a servo motor is connected to that revolute joint which is controlled by a microcontroller programmed to move the member through a certain degrees of rotation. This is the most basic robot which I could think of.
Scope: The motion of this robotic arm is restricted to a circular path. Any task which can be done by the motion along the circular arc can be performed by this robot. Say, we want to draw arcs on sheets of papers or we want to cut them in circular pieces that can be achieved by fitting a pencil and a cutter to the end of this robotic arm.
Limitation: Any point on this robotic arm can only move along a circular path. Any task involving motion other that the circular motion cannot be performed by such robot.
Scope of robots can be extended and limitations can be reduced by adding to the complexity of the robots. One can imagine of the possibilities of motions which can arise by simply adding one more limb to the existing one through a revolute joint and a servo motor. This is a very basic example; in fact, robotics is very vibrant field with infinite scope and an equal numbers of limitations ever reducing.

'GREEN' Buildings.

The Concept of Energy Efficient Roofs or Cool Roofs

  • An energy efficient roof should be designed in such a way that it maximizes the use of the natural energy and minimizes the dependency on the electrical energy for the building.
  • Typically, the major portion of the electrical energy consumed in residential buildings is used for heating and cooling of the building, and next comes illumination.
  • Ideally an energy efficient roof should minimize the consumption of the electrical energy for all three accounts: heating, cooling, and lighting. But, since illumination consists of such small portions of the electrical energy requirements, the cool roof concepts we will discuss here will only related to the heating and cooling of the building.
  • The sun is the major source of heat energy for a home. The heat from the sun increases the refrigeration cost at summer and reduces the heating cost at winter. The heat from the sun reaches us in two forms: via infrared waves and via visible light waves.
  • Energy efficient roofs normally employ reflective and/or absorptive paint coating to either reflect or absorb the heat from visible light. The paints coatings work on the principle of "black body radiation." In short this principle says that a body with black color absorbs most of the energy that falls over it, and vice-versa is the case for a white colored body.
  • The heat traveled through infrared waves anyways gets absorbed.
  • So homes located at the summer regions should use white reflective paints and those at the winter region should use black absorptive paints.
  • Problems enter the picture for homes that have exposure to both summer as well as winter seasons. What color of paint should be used for such homes? A simple answer is: white reflective paint, because normally the refrigeration energy requirement is higher than heating energy requirements and the intensity of the sunlight heat energy is far less in winter. Another answer is temperature reactive color roofs, which make the cool roofs more energy efficient for such weather conditions.
  • You can find the different cool roof materials, which are already available in the market, from the Cool Roof Rating Council website. The website will give you the manufacturer’s details and the solar reflectivity index for each material.

How Temperature Reactive Color Roofs Work

Energy Effecient Roofs
  • A special type of temperature reactive color coating is applied over the temperature reactive color roofs.
  • The chemical composition of the temperature reactive coating is such that it turns white at higher temperature (summer) and turns black at lower temperature.
  • As the paint turns white at higher temperature, it reflects maximum amounts of solar heat and at lower temperature it absorbs the solar heat as it turns black.
  • Few manufacturers are producing the paints, but researches are currently working mainly to reduce the price of such paints. Recently a team of MIT students claimed that they invented roof tiles that can save energy in all conditions. Also, there is a claim from United Environment & Energy of Horseheads (UEE) that they have developed a “smart” coating of this type. The Alsa Corporation is a manufacturer of reactive color coatings.

Conclusion

There are many methods available for making roofs energy efficient, and using temperature reactive color roofs is one of them. Traditionally, the cool roofs use either reflective white paint coating or absorptive black paint coating depending upon the weather conditions. Permanent white paint coatings are energy efficient for summer season, but counter-effective for the winter. Temperature reactive color roofs are effective for both summers as well as winter seasons because they change color with the temperature. The research is on for making the temperature reactive coatings more affordable and durable.

The 5 Goals of a Project Manager

These goals are generic to all industries and all types of projects. Regardless of your level of experience in project management, set these 5 goals for every project you manage.
Goal 1: To finish on time
This is the oldest but trickiest goal in the book. It's the most difficult because the requirements often change during the project and the schedule was probably optimistic in the first place.
To succeed, you need to manage your scope very carefully. Implement a change control process so that any changes to the scope are properly managed.
Always keep your plan up to date, recording actual vs. planned progress. Identify any deviations from plan and fix them quickly.
Goal 2: To finish under budget
To make sure that your project costs don't spiral, you need to set a project budget at the start to compare against. Include in this budget, all of the types of project costs that will accrue, whether they are to do with people, equipment, suppliers or materials. Then work out how much each task in your plan is going to cost to complete and track any deviations from this plan.
Make sure that if you over-spend on some tasks, that you under-spend on others. In this way, you can control your spend and deliver under budget.
Goal 3: To meet the requirements
The goal here is to meet the requirements that were set for the project at the start. Whether the requirements were to install a new IT system, build a bridge or implement new processes, your project needs to produce solutions which meet these requirements 100%.
The trick here is to make sure that you have a detailed enough set of requirements at the beginning. If they are ambiguous in any way, then what was initially seen as a small piece of work could become huge, taking up valuable time and resources to complete.
Goal 4: To keep customers happy
You could finish your project on time, under budget and have met 100% of the requirements-but still have unhappy customers. This is usually because their expectations have changed since the project started and have not been properly managed.
To ensure that your project sponsor, customer and other stakeholders are happy at the end of your project, you need to manage their expectations carefully. Make sure you always keep them properly informed of progress. "Keep it real" by giving them a crystal clear view of progress to date. Let them voice their concerns or ideas regularly. Tell them upfront when you can't deliver on time, or when a change needs to be made. Openness and honesty are always the best tools for setting customer expectations.
Goal 5: To ensure a happy team
If you can do all of this with a happy team, then you'll be more than willing to do it all again for the next project. And that's how your staff will feel also. Staff satisfaction is critical to your project's success.
So keep your team happy by rewarding and recognizing them for their successes. Assign them work that complements their strengths and conduct team building exercises to boost morale. With a happy motivated team, you can achieve anything!
And there you have it. The 5 goals you need to set yourself for every project.
Of course, you should always work smart to achieve these goals more easily. Use online software to help you manage projects on time and under budget, like ProjectManager.com
